Who is a tax filer?

Any individual or organization is liable to submit a tax return to the government thereby declaring their income and subsequent taxes for the given year.In Pakistan, you have to comply with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for fulfillment of the tax duty.

 

How does it work?

The taxpayer provides all the information in his/her tax return which FBR uses to calculate tax upon him. Prior to filing a tax return, you have to register yourself as a taxpayer on the FBR portal.

Afterward, you will be awarded a registration ID popularly known as a National Tax Number (NTN).

 

How you can check the filer status?

 Here is a list of steps to follow, to check your filer status on the official website of the FBR.

  • Go to a search browser and search for the official website of the FBR which is: https://fbr.gov.pk/
  • Now scroll down the website, on the extreme left side, you find the online services tab.
  • Here you will find another tab called “Filer Status Inquiry “, click on it.
  • In this tab, enter your NTN and click on the check button.
  • The website will display your status in one of three options i.e.; A tax filer, Non-filer, or Provisional Filer.
  • Now proceed further, according to your given status.

Step 1: Check your eligibility

 First of all check, either your income bracket is eligible for a tax or not. For this purpose, you can consult a tax professional or can visit the official website of FBR.

Step 2: Put yourself on the FBR record

 This involves filling out a registration form and submitting it with mandatory documents such as:

  • Copy of Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC)
  • Copy of Business registration certificate

You can submit this application by hand or can apply online through the FBR website.

 

Step 3: Obtain an NTN

 Upon successful registration as a filer, you will be issued a unique registration number called as NTN. The NTN will be used for all your future transactions with the FBR.

 

Step 4: File your tax return

 Now you are all set to file your tax returns. Having registered with FBR as a taxpayer, now you have to regularly file your tax returns.The due date to file tax a return is usually, the end of June of every financial year.
