Honorable Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the long-awaited Margalla Avenue Project on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, in Islamabad. The avenue will connect new sectors of Islamabad with GT Road.
The Country’s premier has inaugurated Phase 1 of the project which comprises 5.5 Km out of 35 Km in total length of Margalla Avenue.
Connecting the dots with Margalla Avenue
Phase 1 of the avenue incorporates the construction of a road from the E-12 toll plaza to Grand Trunk Road. This six-lane commuting project is completed at a total cost of 4 billion rupees.
These six lanes of Margalla Avenue as an important segment of Rawalpindi Ring Road will link Sangjani on GT Road while BaharaKahu (Murree Expressway) and Islamabad City on the east and west side respectively.
The celebrated Margalla Avenue will provide an alternative route to the Srinagar Highway to provide hassle-free access to the N-5 National Highway.
Margalla Avenue will expand from Grand Trunk (GT) Road to D-12 to connect to Khayaban-I-Iqbal due to the completion of the construction of an interchange and the remaining section of 11th Avenue. All these particulars are meant to reduce the traffic load on Srinagar Highway.
As per the given information, the project has gone through a few mandatory changes. The road consisted of four lanes (two on each side) earlier; now, it has been upgraded to a six-lane road. The road’s built-in quality is according to motorway standards.
The reduced commuting time
The Margalla Avenue will limit the travel time to just 7 minutes from Sangjani to Islamabad City.
The distance from D-12 to GT Road takes 40 to 50 Minutes of travel time which will be reduced to 10 to 12 Minutes after the completion of the avenue.
Previously, you could travel from Islamabad to CDA Sector B-17 Islamabad (Multi Gardens) in an hour time which has now cut-down to 15 minutes.
