The Kharian-Rawalpindi Motorway

The Kharian-Rawalpindi Motorway project, located in the Punjab province of Pakistan, will be built to serve over 40 million people who live along the route from Rawalpindi to Kharian, and will greatly improve the connectivity and economic activity of this historically important region. Once completed, the motorway will provide travelers with direct access to several major cities in the region, including Islamabad, Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan and Sialkot.

Project Details

As a new motorway facility, it will continue to operate along the currently operating Lahore-Sialkot Motorway and the under-construction Sialkot-Kharian Motorway. The project begins at the Sialkot-Kharian Motorway junction interchange near Kharian and ends near T-Chowk near Rawalpindi/Islamabad.

The proposed motorway travels along the same side of the N-5 as these populated places: Jhelum, Mangla, Dina, Sohawa, Gujar Khan, Mandra, and ends near Rawat near T-Chowk (the place where the Islamabad Expressway intersects with the N-5).

Taking into account traffic volumes, the project motorway designed as an access-controlled four-lane facility. Which will expanded to six lanes based on the Level of Service (LOS) requirements.

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) will included for safer and more efficient road operations. The design is based on NHA specifications. The alignment/route of the motorway facility chosen in consideration of future connectivity with other planned facilities.

ECNEC Approved

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) has approved the construction of the Kharian-Rawalpindi motorway. The cost of project is Rs 108.41 billion. The motorway will built on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode. NHA will be responsible for maintenance and operations.

Project Completion Time Frame

The Kharian-Rawalpindi Motorway  a project that will cost Rs 108.41 billion. And will executed on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode. The project would completed in two years and the total length of the motorway is 117.2 kilometers. This project will mean progress for people in cities along the route by providing them with a modern, efficient transportation option.
