What is the Importance of this Property Ownership Law?

Many people in Punjab province lost their land to powerful people through illegal land grabbing. The land mafia uses fake documents and bribes the corrupt land Revenue department officers to take over plots of land.

 

Mostly, the affected people are financially poor, and they cannot afford to hire a lawyer. Therefore, the Punjab Protection of Ownership of Immovable Property Ordinance 2025.

How will it work?

The District Dispute Resolution Committee will work in the following ways:

  • The property owner will apply directly to the relevant Deputy Commissioner.
  • A District Dispute Resolution Committee will work in each district with the deputy commissioner as its head. It will also include the District Police Officer, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue), and other relevant officials.
  • The committee will summon records, hold hearings, and take immediate administrative measures to protect property.
  • The Dispute Resolution Committees will decide the case within 90 days after the complainant’s application. This time period can be extended to 90 days again after the commissioner’s approval.
  • Both parties must appear in person, and the lawyers’ representation will not be allowed.
  • After the final decision, the committee will recover the land within 24 hours and hand it to the rightful owner.

 

  • The committee will send its report or any settlement to the property tribunal. If the dispute remains unresolved, the committee will refer the case to the tribunal within 30 days.
  • A false or malicious complaint can result in 1 to 5 years imprisonment and a fine of 25 % of the property value.
